Malnourished cancer patients ‘experience more psychological distress’

Washington, Mar 22 : A new study has revealed that cancer patients who are malnourished experience significantly greater levels of psychological distress than those who are more adequately nourished.

For the study, Dr Shafia Amdouni, from the Cancer Nutrition Rehabilitation Program at Canada''s McGill University Health Center, and colleagues set out to examine the relationship between malnutrition and psychological distress in patients who were taking part in a cancer nutrition rehabilitation program.

They looked at 213 patients with advanced cancer, asking them to assess their own nutrition status and their distress.

golf coursesWashington, March 22 : A new research has determined that by taking advantage of reuse water, the golf industry can maintain their courses more effectively, and help them stay green.

So far, golf course superintendents have expressed concerns over the use of reuse water because of hidden costs associated with the practice.

These hidden costs include: foliar damage to ornamental plants, decline in water quality and aesthetic value of irrigation ponds and water features, related damage to equipment, long-term salt buildup in soil, and increased levels of turfgrass stress.

A quarter of the world''s land area is degrading, reveals study

Washington, March 22 : A new study has determined that almost a quarter of the world''s land area is degrading, often in very productive areas.

Land degradation, which is the decline in the quality of soil, water and vegetation, is of profound importance, but until now, there have been no consistent global data by which to assess its extent and severity.

Now, a new study published in the journal Soil Use and Management attempts for the first time to measure the extent and severity of land degradation across the globe and concludes that 24 percent of the land area is degrading - often in very productive areas.

It measures global land degradation based on a clearly defined and consistent method using remotely sensed imagery.
