Car sales drop by 19 per cent in India

New Delhi - As high interest rates and a slowing economy hit India's auto industry, domestic car sales fell by 19.38 per cent in November according to figures released Wednesday.

Sales of motorbikes fell by 20.24 per cent and commercial vehicle sales were down by 49.52 per cent in November compared to the same month in 2007, according to figures released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.

Several automakers cut prices and announced partial shutdowns at plants in December as they scale down production.

The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry said in its latest survey that several manufacturing sectors could see production cuts of up to 50 per cent and job cuts of 30 per cent over the next few months.

Dikshit, leading the party to a third consecutive victory in the national capital, was elected at a meeting of all the newly elected 42 party MLAs.

The meeting was attended by AICC General Secretary Mohsina Kidwai, Minister of State for Finance P K Bansal and DPCC chief Jai Prakash Aggarwal.

At the meeting, a resolution supported by all the MLAs was placed which left the choice of the CLP leader to party chief Sonia Gandhi.

Summons Issued Against AIIMS Doctors For ‘Fabricating’ Medical ReportsDelhi court has issued summons against three AIIMS doctors in order to explain the “fabrication” of medical reports of a woman who filed a dowry harassment case against her separated partner (husband) and his family members (in-laws) after allegedly being beaten up by them.

Additional Sessions Judge Brijesh Kumar Garg noted the alleged discrepancy in the reports of the woman made by physicians S Lalwani, Arvind Kumar and Gaurav.

The accused Tej Pal Singh and the appellant, both divorcees, married on March 29, 2008.

Parliament session begins today

Parliament session begins todayThe ten-day session of Parliament, the last one before the next Lok Sabha polls will begin today. The session, the third part of the monsoon session which began on 21st July, is being conducted at a time when the assembly election results have a soothing effect on the government.

The session, expected to last till 23 December, will create a record of sorts for its length. 63 die after bus catches fire in IndiaNew Delhi  - A total of 63 people, including women and children, were killed when a bus they were riding in caught fire in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh, news reports said Wednesday.

The accident happened on Tuesday when a bus carrying a group of pilgrims from the Hindu holy town of Mathura to Sultanpur caught fire in Firozabad district of Uttar Pradesh, IANS news agency reported.

"The death of 63 people, including women and children, has been confirmed," Firozabad district magistrate Amit Gupta said.
