Chidambaram, Jaswant to reply to Election Commission notice todayNew Delhi, Apr 7: Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram will reply to a Election Commission notice today for allegedly offering poll sops during his Rajasthan visit for a security review.

On Monday, the Commission granted one-day extension to him.

The Commission had issued a notice to Chidambaram for violating the model code of conduct.

The Commission received a complaint from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in this regard.

Agitated residents set West Delhi police booth on fire over hooch deathsNew Delhi, Apr 6 : A group of people shouted slogans and set objects on fire outside a police booth in the Rajouri Garden area of West Delhi on Monday to express their rage on the deaths, which have taken place due to consumption of contaminated alcohol.

According to media reports, at least 15 deaths have taken place in West Delhi due to spurious alcohol. The deceased include poor rickshaw pullers and labourers.

President condoles passing away of Puducherry Lt. GovernorNew Delhi, Apr 6 : President Pratibha Patil has condoled the passing away of Puducherry Lt. Governor Govind Singh Gurjar.

In a condolence message to his wife, Kamlesh Gurjar, the President said, " Gurjar was a well-known public figure, who worked for the welfare of the people in Rajasthan, during his public life. His passing away is a deep loss for the people, especially for those in Rajasthan."

Gurjar died following a cardiac arrest here on Monday.
