Manmohan Singh leaves for New York tomorrowNew Delhi, Sept 21 : Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will leave on a ten-day visit to the United States and France on Monday. During the visit the Prime Minister will address the UN General Assembly on September 26.

According to sources, the Prime Minister will take up the expansion and reforms in the UN Security Council so that the world body reflects the current global realities.

He is also expected to take up the issues of global food crises, combating terrorism, promoting disarmament and global economy with world leaders on the side lines of the UN General Assembly.

Three more suspected militants arrested for Delhi blastsNew Delhi, Sept 21 : The Delhi Police claimed to have arrested three more suspected militants allegedly involved in last Saturday’s Delhi serial blasts.

In a joint operation by the Special Cell and South District police, the three Indian Mujhaideen (IM) terror suspects identified as Zia-ur-Rehmaan, Shakeel and Shakir, were taken into custody from South Delhi’s Jamia Nagar this morning, police said.

49 per cent FDI in defence sector on need basis: Antony

A K AntonyNew Delhi, Sept 20 : Defence Minister A. K. Antony said on Saturday that it would consider allowing 49 per cent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the defence sector "on a case-to-case basis."

The Defence Minister was speaking at an ASSOCHAM seminar on defence procurement policy. He said, “We will stick to the policy of allowing 26 per cent FDI in Indian defence sector. We will consider allowing 49 per cent FDI only on a case-to-case basis, if the industry is able to convince us."

CPM charges UPA govt. of "underhand deals" with US nuclear firms

UPA, CPI(M)New Delhi, Sept 20 : The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Saturday charged the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government with striking "underhand deals" with US nuclear firms to buy reactors even before the 123 agreement has been clinched.

The CPM alleged that India had put in about Rs three lakh crore to "bail out" the ailing American nuclear industry.

The CPM politburo, in a statement, expressed its opposition to "these underhand deals struck by the UPA government" and demanded a cost-benefit analysis by an independent body before key decisions are taken regarding energy policy in the country.

Hindu activist arrested in India after attacks on Christians New Delhi  - Police have arrested a Hindu right-wing activist in the southern Indian state of Karnataka in connection with attacks on Christian places of worship, news reports said Saturday.

Mahendra Kumar, convenor of the Karnataka Bajrang Dal, an offshoot of the Hindu right-wing Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP - World Hindu Council) was detained in Mangalore district on Friday on charges of criminal conspiracy and promoting enmity between different religious groups, PTI news agency reported.
