Sixteen killed in bus accident in northern India

AlmoraAlmoraNew Delhi  - At least 16 people were killed and 29 injured when the bus they were travelling in left the road and plunged into a river in India's northern mountainous state of Uttarakhand on Wednesday, a news report said.

The bus was carrying 45 passengers at the time of the accident in the Uttarakashi district some 120 kilometres north-east of state capital Dehradun, police official Hukam Singh Khati told the PTI news agency.

The bus driver lost control of the vehicle when one of its front tyres burst, Khati said.

The victims included seven Hindu pilgrims who were visiting shrines in the region.
