530 election observers to supervise Assembly polls in five states

New Delhi, Nov 3 : The Election Commission has appointed 530 officers as Observers to supervise the election process of Legislative assemblies of Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram and Rajasthan.

The Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami and Election Commissioners Navin B Chawla and Dr. S. Y. Quarishi briefed these officers in New Delhi on Monday to ensure quick redressal of complaints that are received from political parties and candidates from these states.

CBI files 9 FIRs in mega food scam in UP

CBI files 9 FIRs in mega food scam in UPNew Delhi, Nov 3 : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed FIRs in connection with Rs 35,000 crore food grain scam in Uttar Pradesh which took place between March 2004 and October 2005.

UP Chief Minister Mayawati had recommended for the CBI probe into the food grain scam on December 1, 2007.

The CBI has filed nine FIRs related to the scam - eight in Ballia and one in Lakhimpur Kheri where the scam amount was more than Rs one crore. Over 35 government officials were found to be involved in it as per the preliminary CBI probe.

Raj Thackeray New Delhi, Nov. 3 : At least 25 people attacked the Maharashtra Sadan here over the state government’s go slow in ordering the arrest of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray.

Thackeray, they claimed, was responsible for the attacks on North Indians in Mumbai and in other parts of Maharashtra, and therefore, should have been detained for disturbing the peace.

Manmohan assures Paswan of enhanced security after landmine blast

Ram Vilas PaswanNew Delhi, Nov 3 : A day after a landmine blasted Steel Minister Ram Vilas Paswan’s security vehicle in the Maoist-infested West Midnapore in West Bengal, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today assured him of enhanced security.

The Prime Minister had a word with Paswan and told him that he will direct the ministry concerned to enhance his security.

“The Prime Minister has assured me to do the needful to enhance security for me,” Paswan said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee also ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident.

Besides a delegation level meeting with Defence Minister AK Antony, Klich will hold talks with the chairmen of top Defence Public Sector Undertakings including HAL, BEL, BEML and Ordnance Factories Board (OFB).
