10 killed as bus plunges into river in northern India

March to nowhere in Jammu and KashmirNew Delhi  - At least 10 people were killed and another 10 are missing after a bus plunged into a river in India's northern state of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, a news report said.

More than 20 were injured in the accident when the bus skidded off the road into the Chenab river in the southern Kishtwar district of the mountainous state, the PTI news agency reported.

Seven people died at the scene, one on the way to hospital and two succumbed to their injuries at the hospital, the report said. Three women were among the victims.

Central assistance for flood-hit areas of Bihar

Manmohan SinghNew Delhi, Sept 4 : The Centre continues to extend all possible assistance to Bihar Government for supplementing their efforts in managing the ongoing flood situation. The National Crisis Management Committee reviewed the situation today.

The Centre has deployed 37 Army columns, 13 helicopters, 599 boats, 783 National Defence Reserve Force (NDRF) personnel, 7695 tents, ten satellite phones, four lakh drinking water bottles, ten water purifying plants for assisting the State in rescue and relief operations.

BJP, AGP ally in Assam for Lok Sabha polls

Assam BJP president Ramanand Deka on Thursday met the Central Election Committee of the party and held discussions with them about the stand to be adopted by the party during the general elections.

Antony to visit USA from Sept. 7

A K AntonyNew Delhi, Sept 4 : Union Defence Minister A. K. Antony is to lead a high powered delegation to the USA next week from September 7 to 10.

The visit is at the invitation of the US Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates who visited India in February this year. The delegation will comprise of the Defence Secretary, Director General (Acquisitions) and senior three star officers from the Army, Navy and Air Force. The last time the Defence Minister visited the USA was in June, 2005.
