Navy Chief meets Manmohan Singh to resolve pay-related issues

Naval Chief Admiral Sureesh MehtaNew Delhi, Sept 5 : Navy Chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh late on Friday evening and brought up the “core issues” dogging the defence personnel in the government-notified Sixth Pay Commission report.

After the Defence Minister, it is the Prime Minister’s doors that the Armed Forces have knocked for resolving issues regarding “disparities” and “lowering of status” in the Sixth Central Pay Commission (CPC).

Air Force donates 223 tones of ration for Bihar flood victims

Bihar FloodNew Delhi, Sep 5 : The Indian Air Force has donated 223.80 metric tones of ration for the flood relief operations in Bihar.

The ration will mainly include Atta, Rice, Dal, Sugar, Salt and Ghee. The distribution of this ration will take place through Army Central Command, which is designated as the Nodal agency for Bihar flood relief operations.

Meanwhile, Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta today chaired a meeting of the National Executive Committee to review the flood situation in Bihar. Representatives from the concerned ministries of the Government of India and the Bihar Government were among those present at the meeting.

Human Rights Watch: Indian forces, Maoist rebels use child fighters

Human Rights WatchNew Delhi - Indian security forces and Maoist rebels should end the use of child fighters in their long conflict in the central state of Chhattisgarh, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said Friday.

The New York based rights group said both sides have long used children, some of them as young as 12, in armed operations.

While the Maoist rebels admit they recruit children, India's federal Home Ministry has denied the allegations.

India, Colombia sign MoU for cooperation in hydrocarbon sector

New Delhi, Sept 5 : India and Colombia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for cooperation in hydrocarbon sector here today.

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Murli Deora and the visiting Colombian Minister of Energy and Mines Hernan Martinez Torres inked the MoU.

Deora said the MoU provides an umbrella framework to facilitate and enhance bilateral cooperation in this sector. The two sides have agreed to cooperate in the entire spectrum of hydrocarbon sector particularly in the areas of exploration and production of oil and gas, exchange of training and human resource development, and exchange of visits of professionals and technicians.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said in a statement here that India would work with the international community to advance the "common objective" of non-proliferation.

Indian businessman gets five years in jail in hit-and-run case

Sanjeev NandaNew Delhi - Businessman Sanjeev Nanda was sentenced Friday to five years in jail for running over and killing six people, including three police officers, in 1999 in New Delhi.

Nanda, 30, was found guilty by a city court Tuesday after a nine-year trial, which saw most witnesses turn hostile.

Another accused, Rajeev Gupta, was sentenced to a year in prison for destruction of evidence while his two domestic helpers were given six months each on the same charge.
