Election Commission meets State commissioners

N GopalaswamiNew Delhi, Feb. 4 : The full Election Commission on Wednesday discussed the preparations of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections with the Chief Electoral Officers of all the states and Union Territories.

Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami presided the meeting, which discussed the progress in the revision of electoral rolls, requirement of poll staff, Progress in issuance of photo identity cards and other measures for smooth conduct of elections.

The Commission already held detailed discussions with the national and regional parties on Tuesday.

Efforts to activate National Police Mission underway

New Delhi, Feb 4 : Additional Secretary in Home Ministry Anita Choudhary, at an internal security meet, said that an executive committee meeting to discuss the modernisation plans of the police force would be convened soon.

Concerned over the lack of protective equipment to tackle the recent terrorist strikes in Mumbai, a national police mission has been undertaken to mordenise the Indian police department by procuring better weapons and modern gadgets.

Choudhary revealed that the mission has been divided into six parts in which the Police authorities have been asked to come up with innovative ideas to renew the force.

She said that the police would plan a road map to deal with several security challenges in the next ten years.

India-specific safeguards agreement will open gateway for nuclear trade: CII

As per the conditions specified in the agreement, India could import reactor technology including fuel and services from the USA and other countries.

Nuclear reactors operating in India will be also put under IAEA Safeguards in a phased manner as committed by the Government.

Septuagenarian jailed for taking 50-cent bribe two decades ago

India MapNew Delhi - An Indian court has sentenced a 75-year old doctor to jail for receiving a 25 rupee (50 US cents) bribe nearly a quarter of a century ago, a news report said Wednesday.

Balgovind Prasad was arrested caught by police in eastern Patna city in 1985 for accepting the bribe from a sweeper to issue a fake medical certificate, the PTI news agency reported.

A trial court convicted him in 1992 and gave him a one-year jail term. He was immediately granted bail as he appealed the sentence in the Patna high court.
