Honeybees’ dance inspires more efficient Internet servers

Washington, November 17: Diagram of Honeybee DanceResearchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have developed a honeybee dance-inspired communications system, which they claim helps Internet servers work more efficiently.

The new system reduces the possibility of a Web site’s becoming overwhelmed with requests and locking out potential users and customers.

In tests based on real Internet traffic, the honeybee method has been found to improve service by 4-25 per cent.

Internet game generates enough rice to feed 50,000 people for 1 day

London, November 12: A word game on the internet called FreeRice has raised such a huge amount of money for the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) that it can purchase enough rice to feed 50,000 people for one day.

The game, which went online in early October, tests the vocabulary of participants. Each time an internet user clicks on a correct answer, the website donates money to purchase 10 grains of rice.

So far, the game has raised one billion grains of rice, which is enough rice to feed 50,000 people for one day, the WFP said.

"FreeRice really hits home how the web can be harnessed to raise awareness and funds for he world's number one emergency, " the BBC quoted WFP head Josette Sheeran as saying.

Yahoo Launches Its Kick Start Network

Yahoo Inc. has launched a new professional social network that is officially Yahoo_KickStartcalled Yahoo Kickstart.

Web Access For Visually Disabled

IBMAll is set for the Technology and Software giant, IBM to launch a multimedia web browser for visually impaired. Using this web browser, they can access web video and audio. This software for visually impaired, codenamed the Accessibility Browser or A-Browser is created by Dr. Chieko Asakawa, who has been blind since age 14 and is a senior researcher at IBM’s research laboratory in Tokyo. Blind and partially-sighted people will get the unbelievable control over multimedia application using a keyboard to control media player software.
