Nandigram, Nov 7 : Tension continued prevail in Nandigram, West Bengal, today, a day after fierce fighting between the members of Bhoomi Ucched Pratirodh Committee (BUPC) and CPI (M) activists.
 
There were reports of fresh violence from a few pockets of Nandigram. However, IG (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia denied that any fresh incidents had taken place.

On Tuesday, two persons were killed and 10 others injured in a fresh bout of violence. The casualties were the victims of a landmine explosion in the area.

CPI (M) and the BUPC supporters exchanged several rounds of fire at Gokulnagar, Ranichak, Bhangaberia and Satengabari.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has vowed to take to the streets from today to demand central intervention and the immediate dismissal of the government of West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee following the fresh outbreak of violence in Nandigram.

This was decided after a meeting with Krishi Jami Raksha Committee in which Congress representatives were also present.

Mamata also said she would be writing to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, detailing the state of affairs at Nandigram.

She met Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday.

Referring to Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Roy's statement that the firing had taken place from the CPI (M) stronghold of Khejuri, she said, "This has clearly vindicated our claim that CPI (M) has mounted an attack on the people of Nandigram.

Earlier, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed concern over Nandigram violence and asked Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil to look into it urgently.

Nandigram has been the scene of recurring clashes since January resulting in deaths, including 14 in police firing and violence on March 14 when villagers resisted the police from entering. (ANI)
