Trial games to test venues

CWG organisers confident despite Parl. panel's report that Delhi's running behind schedule

The organising committee of the Commonwealth Games has said that trial games, to be held two months before the mega event, will help test infrastructure.

"The trial games will be held from August 1 to 12 next year in which we will be able to test venues as these will feature all disciplines to be held in the Commonwealth Games," said Randhir Singh, vice-chairman of the organising committee.

The Commonwealth Games are scheduled to be held from October 3 to 14, 2010.

"Had we been handed over the infrastructure a little earlier, we would probably have liked to host a couple of international events, but I am sure we will be fairly well prepared for the event," he said.

The statement came even as a Parliamentary Standing Committee said Delhi was running far behind the schedule in preparing for the Games and suggested that there was little co-ordination between various committees.

"We have held over 500 meetings between various committees and there is no confusion on any aspect. Yes, there are certain areas where we are dependent on the state government, but are confident that they will ensure that everything that needs to be done, is done in time," he said.

Randhir, who is also the secretary-general of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), reiterated that all venues would be completed by the end of this year.

"As for the World Cup badminton in Hyderabad (August 8 to 13 this year), we were originally hoping to use it to test our infrastructure, but it will now help us prepare in other organisational aspects for the discipline," said Randhir.
