Mexico City - Two people and 60 horses were killed in sudden heavy rain that fell in and around Mexico City, local media reported Tuesday.

The heavy rain in Mexico Valley, which holds Mexico City and several municipalities in the adjoining state of Mexico, fell for several hours on Monday and flooded hundreds of homes and main roads in Mexico City's suburbs. In some places, the floodwater was up to a metre deep, trapping vehicles whose occupants had to be rescued by the fire department.

A 12-year-old secondary-school student was killed after being caught on his way home from school in a water current on a street in Ecatepec, in Mexico state. The water filled with rocks and mud dragged the student some 400 metres.

A 45-year-old man, who was taking care of 60 horses at a horseriding club in Naucalpan, died along with the animals when the stables were caught in the water, the fire department said. (dpa)
