Uma Bharti reiterates her support to Advani

Uma Bharti reiterates her support to AdvaniNew Delhi, Mar 19: Bharatiya Janashakti Party leader Uma Bharti on Thursday reiterated support to Bharatiya Janata Party''s prime ministerial candidate L K Advani.

"I have met Advani for the third time now. I have already met him twice earlier. I told him that I would offer all support to him that would be required for him to become the Prime Minister. But let me clarify once again that I don''t wish to join BJP, I am happy with my party and I am proud of it. I have not been able to fight elections due to lack of funds," said Bharti.

Bharti, a former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, had sent a letter to Advani on Tuesday that said she would be "happy to see Advani in the Prime Minister''s chair." Her move is being seen as reconciliation effort to woo the BJP ahead of the elections. Though she refused to comment on BJP leader Varun Gandhi, she said that Varun should be careful in his statements.

She slammed leaders of Samajwadi Party (SP) who said that such communal statements were expected from a leader of BJP.

"Varun should be careful while giving statements. But I will also like to say that those people who have given Sanjay Dutt a seat, those who can make him a candidate who has criminal charges against him and has been accused of links with terrorists, they should not make any comment on Varun," said Bharti.

Varun has been charged with issuing communal statements during a rally in his Pilibhit constituency, and the Election Commission has ordered a video tracking of his entire campaign.

On Wednesday, the Election Commission slapped fresh notices on both Varun and the BJP seeking their response by Friday to what it termed were clear violations of the Model Code of Conduct.

The Election Commission also suspended two senior officials of Pilibhit district of Uttar Pradesh and transferred two others on the charge of failing to act against Varun for his alleged inflammatory speech. (ANI)
