Wildfires continue ravaging Portugal and Spain

Wildfires continue ravaging Portugal and Spain Lisbon/Madrid - Wildfires on Monday continued ravaging Portugal and Spain, where such blazes have consumed tens of thousands of hectares of vegetation this summer, firefighters and officials said.

More than 70 firefighters were trying to contain a blaze in Portugal's northern Braganca district. Two other fires were brought under control in Braganca and Guarda districts.

A fourth fire crossed over to Spain, where it entered Arribes del Duero nature park near Ciudad Rodrigo.

Two fires also remained out of control in Spain's northern Zamora province after burning down more than 1,300 hectares of forest and bush. One of the blazes forced the temporary evacuation of the village of Cabanas de Aliste on Sunday.

Another fire was extinguished in that region after erupting at a military exercise camp and devastating more than 6,000 hectares in six days.

The Portuguese authorities say more than 30 major fires devastated over 9,000 hectares by August 15 this year. In Spain, fires are estimated to have affected more than
75,000 hectares. (dpa)
