A 12-year-old girl who had arrived in Mumbai from a foreign trip has shown the symptoms of swine flu.

The girl, who hails from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, came back from a 7-day vacation in Bangkok along with her family members.

As a defensive measure, Maharashtra Health Authorities have quarantined the girl, who was found to be suffering from fever and cough, in a ward in Mumbai's Kasturba Hospital.

While providing this information to the media persons, Dr. Uddhav Gawande, Maharashtra Influenza Control Programme’s Nodal Officer said, “The girl arrived here this afternoon from Thailand with her family and she was found to be suffering from fever and cough. As a precautionary measure, we have quarantined her.”

Dr. Gawande also said that the throat swab of the girl has been forwarded to National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune.

Her medical test reports are expected by Tuesday evening (June 16) after which further steps will be taken, he said.

The girl is the 23rd suspected H1N1 case in the state. Thus far, no one has tested positive for the deadly flu in Maharashtra.

Dr. Gawande added that the chances of the girl affected by flu are far-off since she arrived from Thailand, which is not a high-risk nation as far as Swine flu is concerned.

“However, we are taking all necessary precautions in the matter,” he added.
