Mahindra & Mahindra Share Price Target at Rs 4,100 as Plan Execution Remains Strong: ICICI Securities
ICICI Securities has maintained a Buy rating on Mahindra & Mahindra, raising its target price to Rs 4,100 from Rs 4,000, implying 25% upside from the current market price of Rs 3,284. The brokerage's July 31 results update shows the automaker's first-quarter operating margin came in below estimate at 12.2%, pressured by rising commodity costs across both its automotive and farm equipment segments. Revenue grew 23% year-on-year to Rs 419 billion, in line with expectations, while adjusted profit of Rs 36.8 billion beat estimates on stronger other income. ICICI Securities values the stock using a sum-of-the-parts method, implying 24 times FY28 estimated core earnings.
Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. turned in a first quarter that revenue targets could live with but margins could not. In a July 31 results update, ICICI Securities analysts Vivek Kumar, Ronak Mehta and Smit Shah retained a Buy rating on the automaker and raised their sum-of-the-parts target price to Rs 4,100 a share, up from Rs 4,000. Against a current market price of Rs 3,284, the revised target implies roughly 25% upside. The company's market capitalization stands at approximately Rs 4.08 trillion, the report noted.
Revenue On Target, Margins Fall Short
Consolidated revenue for the June quarter came in at Rs 419 billion, up 23% year-on-year and 6% sequentially, matching the brokerage's forecast. Profitability told a different story: EBITDA rose a comparatively modest 5% year-on-year to Rs 51.1 billion, falling 8% from the prior quarter and landing 4% below ICICI Securities' estimate. The operating margin, at 12.2%, contracted 210 basis points year-on-year and 190 basis points sequentially, coming in 50 basis points below expectation. Adjusted profit after tax bucked the trend, climbing 7% year-on-year to Rs 36.8 billion and beating estimates by 3%, a gap the brokerage attributed to stronger-than-expected other income rather than operational strength.
Segment Scoreboard: Automotive vs. Farm
Automotive
SUV revenue market share fell 230 basis points year-on-year to 25%. Segment EBIT margin slipped to 7.1%, down 180 basis points year-on-year and 40 basis points below estimate. In response, M&M pushed through price hikes of 270 basis points on utility vehicles and 200 basis points on commercial vehicles in July. Management still describes overall demand as healthy.
Farm Equipment
Tractor volumes grew 18% year-on-year, even as domestic market share eased 30 basis points to 44.9%. Management flagged labor shortages as a headwind, while higher government spending, a narrowing rainfall deficit and healthy rabi-season cash flows could support demand. The farm machinery business grew revenue 17% year-on-year, though margins there still trail the company average.
Betting Big on Capacity: 132,000 Units a Month by 2031
The centerpiece of M&M's growth pitch is an aggressive capacity build-out. Utility vehicle production capacity currently stands at 64,500 units per month, split between 56,500 internal-combustion SUVs and 8,000 battery-electric units. The company plans to lift that to roughly 82,000 units per month by the end of the current fiscal year, and ultimately to 132,000 units per month by fiscal 2031, with further expansions slated at its Chakan plant (10,000 additional units per month) and Nagpur facility (40,000 additional units per month, phased over fiscal 2030 and 2031). Near-term, management expects capacity to rise by 3,500 units per month ahead of the festive shopping season.
Electrification metrics are running ahead of the broader industry. E-SUV penetration for M&M stood at 12%, versus an industry average of 9%, in the first quarter. Within its battery-electric and contract-manufacturing business, margins came in at 11.3%, including production-linked incentives, slightly below the 11.7% posted in the prior quarter. The company's XEV 9S electric model, management said, has been received well and is growing strongly. Upcoming launches on the company's NU_IQ platform are intended to fill remaining gaps in the product lineup.

Downside Risks for Investors
- Tepid response to new launches: Slower-than-expected consumer adoption of electric vehicles could weigh on recent and upcoming EV models.
- Tractor market slowdown: Domestic tractor demand is coming off a high base and could moderate faster than anticipated.
- Capital allocation drift: A re-emergence of investment in non-core areas could dilute returns on the automaker's core franchise.
