Hyundai Motor India Share Price Target at Rs 2,450: ICICI Securities

ICICI Securities has maintained a Buy rating on Hyundai Motor India, trimming its target price slightly to Rs 2,450 from Rs 2,475, still implying 21% upside from the current market price of Rs 2,018. The brokerage's July 31 results update shows the automaker's first-quarter EBITDA margin fell 410 basis points year-on-year to 9.3%, hurt by commodity inflation, higher discounting and a supplier fire that trimmed domestic volumes. Even so, management held its 11-14% margin and 8-10% volume growth guidance for fiscal 2027, citing two upcoming nameplate launches and an improving export order backlog as key catalysts.

ICICI Securities has maintained a Buy rating on Hyundai Motor India, trimming its target price marginally to Rs 2,450 from Rs 2,475 while still implying 21% upside from the current market price of Rs 2,018. In a July 31 results update titled "Decent performance in a challenging quarter; new launches underpin robust outlook," the brokerage said the country's second-largest carmaker navigated a difficult first quarter reasonably well and remains on track to hit its full-year growth and margin guidance, aided by an increasingly aggressive new-product pipeline.

Q1FY27: A Tough Quarter, But Broadly In Line

Hyundai Motor India reported revenue of Rs 163.3 billion, down 0.5% year-on-year and 14% sequentially, though about 1% ahead of ICICI Securities' own estimate. Total wholesale volumes came in at 178,154 units, down 1.2% year-on-year and a sharper 14.5% sequentially from the seasonally strong fourth quarter. Average selling prices rose 1% year-on-year and 2% sequentially on the back of calibrated price hikes.

Profitability took a bigger hit: EBITDA margin fell to 9.3%, down 410 basis points year-on-year and 110 basis points sequentially, though broadly in line with the brokerage's forecast. EBITDA itself declined 31% year-on-year to Rs 15.1 billion, while net profit fell 35% year-on-year to Rs 8.9 billion.

Domestic wholesale volumes slipped 1% year-on-year, an outcome the company attributed to a fire incident at one of its suppliers rather than any demand-side weakness. Management guided for a full recovery of the lost volumes in the second quarter, noting that rural demand continues to significantly outpace urban demand — up 23% year-on-year versus just 2% growth in cities.

Margin Bridge: What Squeezed Profitability, What Cushioned It

Headwinds (Sequential) Offsetting Tailwinds
Commodity cost inflation (~100bps impact) Calibrated price hikes
Negative operating leverage from lower volumes Favourable foreign exchange movement
Higher discounting in a competitive market Ongoing cost-control initiatives
Absence of government incentives on the Tamil Nadu plant Absence of certain one-off costs booked in Q4FY26

Despite the sequential margin decline, management reiterated its full-year margin guidance of 11-14% for fiscal 2027, pointing to five levers: higher operating leverage as the company targets 90-92% capacity utilization, reduced discounting, continued calibrated price increases, deeper localisation, and ongoing cost discipline.

Growth Drivers: New Nameplates And Export Recovery

  1. Two new nameplates in the pipeline for fiscal 2027 — a mid-size SUV in the internal combustion engine segment, timed around the festive season, and a compact electric SUV slated for the second half of the year — which the brokerage expects to help the company defend and grow market share.
  2. Capacity expansion underway, with the company preponing the start of a third shift at its Pune facility to October 2026 to meet underlying demand once the supplier-related disruption is resolved.
  3. Export volumes declined roughly 20% year-on-year, hurt by the West Asia conflict's impact on Middle East markets, though management said conditions have since improved. A build-up of order backlog from the Middle East, along with healthy traction for the Venue, Verna and Exter models in Central and South Africa and the Latin America/Mexico region, is expected to support a recovery.
  4. Management reiterated both its 8-10% domestic volume growth guidance and its 8-10% export volume guidance for fiscal 2027, betting that new launches will help the company outperform an industry growth rate expected to moderate in the second half.
Other Disclosures From The Call

Management said Hyundai Motor India has fully complied with CAFE 2 fuel-efficiency norms and does not expect any penalty for the fiscal 2023-27 period. CNG penetration improved to 18% of sales in the quarter, up from 16% a year earlier, while the company's upcoming electric vehicle model is expected to be compliant with India's production-linked incentive scheme from launch, with a focus on higher localisation of battery packs and power electronics.

Stock Levels To Watch

Metric Level (Rs)
Current Market Price 2,018
52-Week High 2,890
52-Week Low 1,658
ICICI Securities Target Price (12-month) 2,450
Market Capitalisation Rs 1,640 billion

The stock is trading well off its 52-week high of Rs 2,890 and closer to the middle of its 12-month range, with the stock's absolute price performance showing an 11% gain over three months but a 3.3% decline over the trailing year — a pattern consistent with a name that has stabilised after a period of weakness and now looks toward its new-launch catalysts.

Estimates And Valuation

Metric FY27E FY28E FY29E
Net Revenue (Rs bn) 800.1 942.7 1,064.1
EBITDA Margin (%) 11.0 12.5 13.0
EPS (Rs) 66.5 90.9 106.8
P/E (x) 30.3 22.2 18.9

The brokerage trimmed its fiscal 2027 EBITDA and profit-after-tax estimates by roughly 4% and 3%, respectively, to reflect the softer margin trajectory, while leaving out-year estimates largely intact. It expects earnings per share to grow 37% in fiscal 2028 as new launches, capacity ramp-up and cost initiatives take hold.

Downside Risks
  • Delays in planned product interventions could push out the market-share gains the brokerage is pricing in.
  • Continued geopolitical uncertainty could further pressure export volumes and overall growth.
  • A further rise in commodity costs, paired with an inability to pass on price hikes amid intense competition, would squeeze margins further.

Promoter holding in Hyundai Motor India stood at 82.5% as of June 2026, unchanged over the prior two quarters, with institutional investors holding the remaining 15% and free float at 17%.
