20 percent of adult New Yorkers suffer from mental health problems
A report released on Thursday has unveiled a star truth about New York City. It has been found that at least one in five adults in New York suffer from mental health problems like depression, substance abuse, suicidal thoughts and other psychological disorders every year.
In order to make things better, New York City's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will be launching a plan known as NYC Thrive. The plan, which is expected to be released by the end of December, goal will be to prevent and treat psychological disorders in the city having 8.4 million residents.
One of the main aims of the project will be to come up with such a system that is able to track mental health in children and adults.
Dr. Gary Belkin, a deputy commissioner of the health department, was of the view, "We have a set of public health issues that affect many people and affect them very deeply. We know what we're going to be doing, and over the coming weeks you're going to be hearing about it".
It is also being said that the mayor's office will give $386 million to mental health in the course of three years. Bill de Blasio's wife, Chirlane McCray has always been quite open about mental health issues. One of the main reasons for the same is that it has affected her family. Her parents have battled depression and her daughter, Chiara, was victim to substance abuse.
