Accused cop seeks bail

VS Gohil files application in sessions court, hearing deferred till Wednesday

Former second inspector of the Naroda police, VS Gohil, applied for bail in the city sessions court on Monday. The metropolitan court had earlier sent Gohil to judicial custody after rejecting an application submitted by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) seeking his remand.

The SIT had sought Gohil’s remand on the ground that, though he was a responsible police officer, he had not fired at the mob when riots had broken out in the area on February 28, 2002.

Gohil, who is currently posted as the Mangrol circle police inspector, said in his bail application that he had already given his statements before the SIT and that he would not tamper with evidence or attempt to influence witnesses in the case if let off on bail. He further said that the SIT had levelled charges of dereliction of duty against him, which were bailable provisions.

In the application filed through lawyer Kinnar Shah, Gohil said he had been on leave since February 6 on account of his wife being ill and would like to be present beside her for this reason. Additional sessions judge AK Aswani deferred hearing in the matter till Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the SIT filed a revision application in the city sessions court against the order of the metropolitan court sending Gohil to judicial custody.

Also, additional sessions judge AK Aswani granted regular bail to two people accused in the Naroda Gaam case, Rajendra alias Kabhai Patel and Pramukh Patel. They had applied for bail through lawyer Rajkumar Chaumal.
