Air India to pursue Star Alliance, but airlines group non-committal

Air India to pursue Star Alliance, but airlines group non-committal Air India has not stopped making efforts to become a member of Lufthansa-led international airline group called Star Alliance.

In a recent interview, Air India CMD Rohit Nandan revealed that Air India approached the alliance last week and emphasised that it was good and performing well as any of the alliance’s members.

Speaking on the topic, Mr. Nandan said, “Air India is still looking at Star Alliance and feels that it must take us as our performance data is better than others and better than ever.”

He insisted that Star Alliance is more fitting for the Indian carrier than any other airline groupings.

Joining Star Alliance will provide Air India with greater access to more traffic as the Alliance network operates more than 21,200 flights daily to a total of 1,356 airports in 193 countries across the globe.

Air India’s proposal for its integration with Star Alliance has been put on hold by global airline group since 31st of July last year.

Air India’s rival carrier Jet Airways is also making efforts to get it inducted into the prestigious Star Alliance. Jet Airways has formally applied for the government’s permission to join the alliance. In addition, it has hit a much broader code share deal with German carrier Lufthansa than what exists with Air India.

The list of Lufthansa-led alliance’s members currently includes United Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines, SWISS Airlines and Air China.
