Angelina Jolie underwent surgery to remove fallopian tubes and ovaries

American actress and envoy Angelina Jolie underwent surgery to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes to cut her cancer risk.

The actress underwent a double mastectomy two years earlier after a blood test revealed that she carried a gene mutation that gave her an 87% chance of developing breast cancer and a 50% risk of ovarian cancer. At that time, the actress revealed that she had lost her mother, grandmother, and aunt to the disease.

In her piece of writing in New York Times Tuesday, Jolie wrote that she carries a mutation of the BRCA1 gene, which is responsible for the increased risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

She mentioned that she had been planning for the latest preventative surgery for some time. However, after a blood test, she got a call from her doctor, who said that the test revealed a number of inflammatory markers that are elevated. The doctor advised her to see a surgeon immediately as it could be a sign of early cancer.

She further mentioned that it is not possible to remove all risk and she remains prone to cancer. According to her, this surgery was complex surgery compared to double mastectomy, however, its effects are more severe.

She added that she is now in menopause, expects some physical changes and will not be able to have any more children. However, she revealed that she is at ease with whatever will follow as she considers this as a part of life and she has nothing to fear.

She wrote, "I went through what I imagine thousands of other women have felt. I told myself to stay calm, to be strong, and that I had no reason to think I wouldn't live to see my children grow up and to meet my grandchildren".
