An attempt by militants to enter Kashmir thwarted by the Indian armyAccording to the Indian army, it thwarted an attempt by militants to enter the Indian-administered portion of the Kashmir region and killed three of them.

Pakistan's Dawn newspaper has reported that the violent confrontation Friday came a day after the prime ministers of India and Pakistan agreed to work towards resuming a dialogue on peace in the disputed area.

The clash took place on a heavily militarized Line of Control dividing Kashmir into two regions administered by India and Pakistan, both of whom claim the entire territory.

Dawn also reported that the countries have fought two wars over Kashmir.

Indian officials have said that attempts by militants to cross the cease-fire line into Indian-controlled areas increase in spring and summer as snow melts in the region's mountain passes.

Pakistan has denied Indian charges that it is funding and arming the militants and says it is doing its best to prevent insurgents from crossing the demarcation line.

Dawn further reported that the insurgency against Indian rule in Kashmir, begun in 1989, has resulted in the death of almost 47,000 people. (With Inputs from Agencies)
