Australian tourist dies after being beaten by bouncers in Greece

Greece becomes 18th EU member state to ratify Lisbon TreatyAthens  - An Australian tourist who was beaten by bouncers while on holiday on the Greek island of Mykonos died after doctors disconnected his life support system, officials said Friday.

Twenty-year-old Doujon Zammit from Sydeny was transferred to a hospital in Athens after being brutally attacked by bouncers near the island's popular Super Paradise beach bar on Tuesday.

The man sufferd serious head injuries after bouncers apparently beat him with an iron bar. Bouncers said they believed Zammit and his group fo Australian friends had stolen handbags from the bar.

Hospital officials said Zammit's family had decided to donate Doujon's organs. His heart will go to an Australian national who is currently hospitalised in Athens' Onassis Cardiac Center.

The four bouncers have been arrested and are in police custody.

A 25-year-old man was initially charged with aggravated assault, but judicial officials said it will likely lead to a more serious charge of manslaughter or murder following Zammit's death. (dpa)
