Doctors in an Austrian state cut off the wrong leg of a 91-year-old woman mistakenly, and then had to amputate the infected leg too.

Surgeons at the St. Johann Hospital in Austria's western state of Tirol, carried out the wrong surgical procedure June 16, and later realized that they cut off a healthy leg after the surgical operation was over.

After some days, they conducted the second amputation that caused the patient losing both her both legs at the end.

In a press statement, the hospital admitted that the medical negligence was caused by surgeon's fault.

"We are most awfully sorry about the incident", its spokesman was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

The hospital has suspended the careless doctor after the incident.

Many medical malpractices caused by human negligence have occurred in Austria in the past few years. In March 2005, wrong medicine given by doctors led to the death of one patient. (With Inputs from Agencies)
