A ban on smokeless tobacco use at sports fields gets approved from the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

Supervisor Mark Farrell proposed the idea on health grounds. He was of the view that smokeless tobacco has no place in sporting events that are heavily attended by impressionable youth. He also affirmed that it has negative health effects.

Farrell said a decline has been seen in cigarette use among youth in the past few years. But he has not seen the same trend in smokeless tobacco use during that period. As per the ban, players, umpires, coaches and all others present at the field will not use smokeless tobacco on the premises.

The ban is also being supporting the local teams and the team managements. Farrell stated that he is quite proud that San Francisco is helping lead the movement that aims to protect youth from the negative aspects of smokeless tobacco that includes e-cigarettes and chewing tobacco.

Supervior Eric Mar said that the law has embedded itself into national culture. He is pleased to inform that ordinance bans the smokeless tobacco from AT&T Park as well. However, a debate is going on as some say it is a personal choice and others are talking about its negative side.
