Blaze destroys wooden hall in Daigoji Temple

Daigoji Temple, KyotoTokyo - A wooden hall within Kyoto's landmark Daigoji Temple complex was destroyed in a blaze, Japanese newspapers reported Monday.

Daigoji Temple, one of Japan's oldest monastery's, was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.

The fire broke out early Sunday in the 150-square-metre building, which is part of the mountain complex. It spread to an adjoining guest house, which likewise burned to the ground.

Buddhist sculptures that stood in the wooden hall are also presumed destroyed.

No injuries were reported. (dpa)
