BMW gives Z4 extensive makeover

BMW gives Z4 extensive makeoverMunich  - BMW has given its Z4 sports car an extensive makeover, showcasing at the Detroit Motor Show in January the model that succeeds the Z4 Roadster and Z4 Coupe.

One of the many new technical features is a hydraulically- operated, retractable hardtop roof that opens and closes in 20 seconds. It also includes a glass rear window for improved visibility.

Retaining the basic design of its predecessor with the long bonnet and short rear, the new Z4 however comes with broader shoulders and more dominant kidney-shaped grille.

Electronically controlled dampers offer three different configurations and lower the ride height by up to 10 mm for a more dynamic drive.

The new Z4 comes with a choice of three six-cylinder power plants in the range of between 150 kW/204 hp and 225 kW/306 hp. The top of the range BMW Z4 sDrive35i accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds with the top speed electronically regulated at 250 km/h. Combined consumption is listed at 8.5 litres per 100 kilometres and CO2 emissions at 219 grams per kilometre.

A storage facility is located behind the driver and passenger seats. The 15.5-litre single compartment stretches the width of the car's interior and features netting to hold the contents in place. It can be complemented by an optional Storage Package that adds further stowage capacity.

A multimedia navigation system features a hard disc drive capable of 12Gb of audio file storage and ConnectedDrive functionality.

BMW has so far not revealed a price structure for the new model. (dpa)
