Brazilians on the Bosphorus give Donetsk UEFA Cup glory By Barry WhelanIstanbul - Brazilians Luiz Adriano and Jadson proved the match-winners for Shakhtar Donetsk to give the Ukrainian side its first European title on Wednesday.

The 2-1 victory in extra-time over Werder Bremen was richly deserved - the German club toiling without its own Brazilian inspiration Diego.

The suspended playmaker could only watch from the stands in the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium as most of the inventiveness in an often stale affair came from Donetsk's quintet of Brazilians.

The sun hardly shone all day all day over Istanbul, and the Bosphorus looked as grey as the Weser on a winter's day in Bremen. But at least Luiz Adriano, Jadson, Ilsinho, Fernandinho and Willian helped raised the unseasonably cool temperatures on the pitch.

Shakhtar Donetsk's Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu was in the end justified in choosing all his Samba deck - after Bremen's own Brazilian, defender Naldo, had cancelled out Luiz Adriano's opener.

There were early signs of inventiveness, mainly down the right where number 11 Ilsinho occasionally shimmered, combining well with Jadson who filled the hole between midfield and attack to good effect.

On the left the yellow-booted Willian fluttered, Fernandinho prodded in a defensive midfield role, and Luiz Adriano glittered when he opened the scoring with a clever chip over Tim Wiese.

Naldo's equalizer came 10 minutes later courtesy of a direct free-kick fumbled into the net by keeper Andriy Pyatov. Bremen's main threat all evening came from set-pieces.

Ten of Shakhtar's 12 goals on the way to the final had come from four of their Brazilians - all but Willian finding the net. And with Jadson bagging eight in Europe this term, including five in the Champions League, it was perhaps little surprise that he broke the deadlock in extra-time.

The 25-year-old, yet to be capped by his country, found himself with enough space to shoot when captain Darijo Srna crossed from the right, and Tim Wiese in goal could only get his hand to the ball before it slowly crossed the line and nestled into the net.

Jadson, who along with Fernandinho joined the club from Atletico Paranaense, had also been influential in the all-Ukrainian semi-final against Dynamo Kiev.

In the second leg he had put Shakhtar ahead and then provided the pass for Ilsinho to strike a late winner.

His winner in Istanbul clinched him the man-of-the-match award as well as glory for Ukraine in what was the last UEFA Cup final before its revamp into the Europa League next season.

And perhaps the canary yellow jersey of Brazil will now beckon along with the bright orange of the "pitmen" from Donetsk.(dpa)
