London - Britain's Conservatives Monday called for an immediate general election to end the "paralysis" of the government of Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Conservative leader David Cameron said a nationwide poll should be held "as soon as possible after the European elections" on June 4.

He urged Conservative Party members campaigning for the European Parliament elections to collect signatures in support of a general election.

"The country does not want to wait another year...the political system is paralyzed," said Cameron, referring to the scandal over expenses of members of parliament (MPs) which has damaged all the main parties.

Analysts said while it is not unusual for an opposition leader to urge an early election, it was clear that the Conservatives' call would increase pressure on Brown in the current crisis.

The next regular general election in Britain must be held before June, 2010. (dpa)
