Brussels - Don't drink and drive, don't fly with dangerous airlines and don't forget to dial 112 if there is an emergency: those are some of the 10 commandments for travellers the European Union's executive published Thursday.
The list should "help European citizens who are travelling, and citizens of other countries visiting Europe, have a better holiday," EU Transport Commissioner Antonio Tajani told journalists in Brussels.
At the top of the EU's 10 commandments is the number 112, an EU-wide phone number for contacting the emergency services.
It is closely followed by an injunction not to drink or take drugs and then drive. According to commission figures, 10,000 people die on Europe's roads every year in drink-related accidents.
The list also highlights EU security rules, warning travellers to check the bloc's blacklist of unsafe airlines before buying a ticket outside Europe, and urging them not to take more than 100 millilitres of any one liquid in their hand luggage, as current laws demand.
And it stresses EU travellers' rights, pointing out that passengers can claim compensation if their flights are cancelled, if they are not allowed on board or if their luggage is lost.
Travellers should also check that the final price of any ticket or package is clearly marked, the list says.
The European Commission is currently fighting to improve its image among EU citizens by cracking down on business abuses such as misleading ticket pricing and hidden airline charges.(dpa)
