BSNL to connect India and Bangladesh with optical fibre cable

BSNL to connect India and Bangladesh with optical fibre cable State-owned telecom service provider Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited is set to lay optical fibre cable to provide higher telecommunication between Agartala, the state capital of Tripura and Akhaura, the nearest Bangladeshi town, the company informed.

Talking to reporters on the developments, Debkumar Chakraborty, General Manager, BSNL in Tripura said that the distance between the two towns are 12 kilo meters and BSNL aims to connect the both by optical fibre cables.

He further added that on completion of the Agartala-Akhaura project, the North Eastern region of the country will be well connected with Bangladesh in terms of telecommunication.

In the mean time BSNL is also conducting a feasibility survey to connect another town in Bangladesh, Chittagong, with Sabroom sub-divisional town in South Tripura. As revealed by Chakraborty, if things work out well BSNL would again lay optical fibre cable to connect these two places which are situated at a distance of 75 km.

Interestingly, the announcement came after Indian Railways on Thursday confirmed that the railway officials from both the countries had finalized railway link alignment to improve connectivity. While 5.4 km of the proposed 13 km-long railway line will remain in India the remaining will be part of Bangladesh's territory.
