Calcutta High Court to hear Rizwanur Rehman case

Kolkata, Jan 11: Rizwanur RehmanThe Calcutta High Court will hear the case on the mysterious death of Rizwanur Rehman today.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday submitted its final report in a sealed cover before Justice Dipankar Dutta.

Rizwan’s elder brother Rukbanur Rehman, including others made a plea to have a copy of the report.

The CBI has been investigating the case for the last four months. It was expected to charge two members of the Todi family of which his wife was a member for involvement in Rizwanur's suicide and two police officials for the destruction of the evidence.

The Calcutta High Court had directed the CBI to probe the case after widespread allegations of police involvement with the influential Todi family.

According to CBI sources, the CBI gathered data from a computer, that was seized from Rizwanur’s maternal aunt's home, that reportedly contained a letter written by the computer graphic designer teacher.

The letter was retrieved at the forensic laboratory in which Rehman revealed the condition of his mind and the non-cooperation from the Todi family in allowing him to meet his wife Priyanka.

Five senior city police officials, including former Commissioner of Police Prasun Mukherjee, were sacked on October 17, 2007 over suspicions of their involvement in the case.

Rizwanur had married Priyanka under the Special Marriages Act on August 18.

Rizwanur's body was found on the railway tracks between Bidhannagar Road and Dum Dum Junction on September 21, almost a month after his marriage to Priyanka, the daughter of businessman Ashok Todi. (ANI)
