According to a CNBC-TV 18 report, the Andhra Pradesh (AP) Chief Minister, K Rosaiah, has written to the centre, seeking an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the allegedly illegal mining activities of the Karnataka Tourism Minister, Gali Janaradhna Reddy, in Anantapur district.
As per the allegations, Obulapuram Mining Corporation, which is owned by Reddy, has been involved in unlawful mining activity in Anantapur district. It is also being alleged that the late chief minister YSR Reddy's son, Kadapa MP YS Jaganmohan Reddy, is also involved in the activities.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court's Central Empowered Committee (CEC) has also come up with a forceful denunciation of the Karnataka Tourism Minister's illicit mining activities, observing that the minister was carrying out illegal mining of iron ore along the Andhra Pradesh-Karnataka border.
The CEC recommendation that all mining activity in the Anantapur area be halted, has further added to the prospect of a CBI inquiry against G Janaradhna Reddy, as does the statement by the AP Leader of Opposition, Chandrababu Naidu, who said: "People are becoming greedy now in Obulapuram mining. They have earned huge money."
Naidu added: "They are now using muscle, money and political power. Ultimately, they are becoming mafia. It is bad for the democracy. The democracy does not survive with these kinds of actions. We have to fight to eradicate mafia gangs."
