CDC releases Map highlighting ‘Most Distinctive’ Causes of Death in US states
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released a map, which has unveiled about the most distinctive causes of death for every state in the United States.
Study’s co-author Francis Boscoe from the New York State Cancer Registry said that the map would definitely start discussions and highlight about things that were unknown before.
The researchers said the report is full of mixed responses. Some causes of death are predictable like black lung disease in coal-producing states and influenza in some northern cold-weather states. But there were some reasons of death that were surprising. To cite an example, death by legal intervention was the most distinctive cause of death in New Mexico, Nevada and Oregon.
By using the rate of death from each cause in a list of 113 causes of death from CDC for each state, the report makers have created the map. The rate of death was then divided by the rate from particular cause in the nation.
The report has helped to know typical reasons behind the higher rates of death. Alaska has a distinctive cause of death. In the state, “the number of deaths due to accidents by boat or plane is 41 per million but in rest of country it's six [deaths] per million, so it's seven times higher”, said Boscoe.
The study researchers affirmed that the most distinctive does not mean high numbers. As per them, it is just a measure of causes of death in some states and not in others. The researchers said they came up with the idea to have such a map with an aim to have discussions on such causes of death that are not much talked about or do not receive much attention.
