Chandrasekhar Rao requests PM to expedite Telangana issue

Chandrasekhar Rao requests PM to expedite Telangana issue New Delhi, Oct 4 : After meeting with Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh over the unresolved Telangana issue, the President of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) K. Chandrasekhar Rao has requested him to expedite the Telangana statehood issue as early as possible.

Rao said that a memorandum has been given to Prime Minister and he has been requested to intervene in the matter as problems in Hyderabad are mounting day by day.

"We met the honorable Prime Minister and gave him a memorandum and also five important points in which the government of India is expected to intervene and solve certain problems. The copies of the paper have been circulated to you (mediapersons) and further also it will be circulated to you," said Rao.

Though Dr. Singh didn''t give any clear cut assurance, Rao also said Manmohan Singh had asked to call off the strike.

"He (Dr. Singh) only appealed to us to please call off the strike, we said it is not in our hands. The people are very angry in Telangana, the employees are very angry, even they are not in a mood to celebrate Dussehra festival, which are very famous festivals," he said.

"So, we have requested the Prime Minister to please expedite the matter if you want to stop the strike, if you want to stop the suicides, which have been committed in Telangana. Please come forward, move forward and expedite the matter and that''s what you have requested. He said that we are in the process but he did not give us a clear-cut assurance. He said we are only working, we are processing, we are talking to people, we require some more time, all this he told us," he added.

Rao further announced that the strike is not going to relent nor it is going to seize till the time the federal government would announce the formation of Telangana state with clear cut time frame and road map.

"This time neither the strike is going to relent nor it is going to seize. The strike will continue, the intensity of the moment will continue till the Government of India comes to announce for formation of Telangana state with a clear cut time frame and with a clear cut road map," said Rao.

For the last 18 days, pro-Telangana activists have stepped up their efforts for the four-decade-old demand of a separate state, which is sought to be carved out of the economically less developed parts of Andhra Pradesh.

The struggle gathered momentum last year after the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government had accepted their demand in principle.

Several protests and shutdowns had brought Andhra Pradesh to a near halt in 2009 and 2010, as pro-Telangana activists persisted with their demand. (ANI)
