Kamal Chawla kept India's hopes alive in the IBSF World Snooker Championship as he stormed into the quarterfinal of the men's event, while his compatriot Pankaj Advani and Yasin Merchant crashed out at HICC Hall in Hyderabad on Sunday.
The 21 years old Chawla knocked out Cyprus's Anthony Brabin 7-70, 51-69, 72-61, 120-14, 65-15, 73-53, 103-15 in the pre-quarterfinal encounter. Earlier in the day, Brabin had defeated Advani
77-59 70-45 71-11 44-77 65-55 02-62 30-65 67-23.
Merchant ousted Alok Kumar 5-1 in the second round to move to the next round, but he failed to advance into the pre-quarterfinal as he went down to Brazil's Igor Figueiredo 1-5 in the third round later in the day.
Indian women also crashed out as national champion Meenal Thakur and former World billiards champion Chitra Magimairaj lost their respective quarterfinal matches. Chitra was thrashed by Kiwi Ramona Belmont 4-1 while Australia's Kathy ParashisMeenal outclassed Meenal 58-13, 49-40, 70-39, 46-72 23-44, 54-42 to advance into the next round.
