Child with a protruding heart dies after 22 days

protruding heartHere's bad news from AIIMS. The 22-day battle of an infant born with a protruding heart came to an end on Wednesday as a fatal bacterial infection resurrected after doctors at AIIMS successfully managed to place the heart back in a sophisticated surgery nearly a fortnight ago.

Dr. A K Bisnoi, cardio-thoracic surgeon who conducted the surgery said: "It is a defeat for us. For a few days, the child was fine. But he could not survive the post- surgery procedures. He was very weak and caught various infections because of a weak immune system."

The surgeon also added that the child also suffered from jaundice. It may be recalled that the unnamed child was suffering from three major bacterial infections which claimed his life on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Bisnoi, the child developed septicaemia, which proved lethal for him.

The child was born on August 25 in a remote village of Bihar. He was brought to the hospital by his father on August 28.

It is learnt that a team from pathology department of the Institute will carry out a thorough examination to identify exact reasons of the child death.
