Color Genomics’ Genetic Testing for Breast Cancer holds promise

Cancer screening is important because early detection is helpful in improving prognosis for the disease. Gene mutations account for up to 15% of breast and ovarian cancers. Keeping in mind the same, Color Genomics focused on genetic screening and has released a breast cancer test that is affordable and accessible.

The testing kit released by Color Genomics costs $249, which is a drastically smaller amount in comparison to several thousands of dollars that typical gene tests cost right now. The kit will simply need a saliva sample.

The company decided to require samples of the material because saliva is easier to collect as compared to blood, making it more convenient for a patient to use the Color Test.

Color Genomics, through a more affordable test, has ensured that access is democratized, and pointed out that every woman has to have the opportunity and choice to get tested for the identification of genetic risks associated with breast as well as ovarian cancer.

The Color team explained, “Knowledge of a woman's genetic risk empowers her to work with her physician to develop a personalized plan based on that information.

Although the Color Test is only one-tenth of the usual price of similar services, it will be screening for 19 genes, including the BRCA1 and BRCA2, all of which impact risks for breast and ovarian cancer.

All the tests need to be ordered by doctors though. Either they should be assigned by Color to review a woman's information or a woman's own physician.

Color has employed board-certified genetic counselors to answer the questions regarding the results of their test. These counselors will be explaining and discussing the results of a Color Test, to the women who undergo screening with the support they need.
