Communal clashes in shahpur injured eight personsEight persons got injured and several houses were set on fire in Nagoriwad locality of Shahpur on Sunday when a communal clash erupted between two communities over damage to an idol in a temple.

The violence had started on Saturday and continued on Sunday as rioters tried to attack nearby mosque due to which there was a heavy stone pelting between the two sides. The clashes left a dozen seriously injured and several burnt houses.

The tension had begun a week ago when some devotees were opposed to construct a temple near Ahmedi Masjid opposite the Nagoriwad police chowky. Again on Saturday evening, they were objected to have noisy Janamastmi celebrations by mosque authority as it was the time of offering evening namaaz.

On the other side, devotees alleged some youth from other community to have damaged an idol in the temple.

Police somehow had managed to reinforce peace in the locality. Some police officials also got hurt during clashes. Inspector K S Sawani of Karanj Police Station, a sub-inspector of Shahpur Police Station and some constables were among the injured.

Police have filed cases against the non-social activists of both the communities.
