Communist stand on nuke deal remains unchanged, says Karat

Coimbatore, Mar 29 : Prakash KaratCommunist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary Prakash Karat today said that the Left Front’s stand on the nuclear deal was unchanged and would remain the same.

Elaborating further, he said that the Left’s stand was not to allow the deal to proceed further.

The Left Front has been quite adamant on its stand on the nuclear deal. The two main parties of the Front -- the CPI and the CPI (M) -- have disfavoured the signing of the deal in its present form, even as the deal has been a bone of contention between the Left and rest of the UPA.

It is being speculated that perhaps the meet concerning the controversial deal between the government and its Left partners next month might be decisive considering the conclusion of the national meets of both CPI and the CPI-M.

Besides the N-deal, Karat also spoke about issues ranging from India-China relations to defeating the communal forces.

Inaugurating a six-day 19th Party Congress here, Karat said that there was a need for a third alternative, Karat opined that it should be built from an alternative platform of policies.

Around 800 delegates, including 70 observers and fraternal delegations from 24 countries are expected to attend the event.

This is the first time when veteran leaders Jyoti Basu and Harkishan Singh Surjeet are not taking part in the Congress as they are not keeping well. (ANI)
