No hike in tariff: MTNLNew Delhi, Aug 3:  State-owned Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) Wednesday said it will not raise its call rates even though leading telecom operators hiked their tariffs last week.

"In the backdrop of the industry trend of increasing call charges, MTNL is not only assuring its customers of keeping the tariffs at the same level, but will continue to take many other measures to further benefit its customers," MTNL's executive director (wireless service) A. K. Bhargava said.

India's MTNL eyes stake in Zambia's ZamtelIndia-based state-run Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) has decided to acquire a stake in Zambian telecom firm Zamtel.

The sources informed that the company has inked non-disclosure pact with Zamtel.

Public-listed Zamtel is Zambia's only licensed fixed-line provider of voice as well as data communications.

As per official sources, the government of Zambia plans to sell up to 75% equity of Zamtel as part of a privatisation drive.

As per reports of media, for the year to end-December, Zamtel's revenue figure stood at $100 million.

Bharti-MTN deal terminated New Delhi, Sep 30 : India's telecom major Bharti Airtel and South Africa's MTN Wednesday terminated their talks for a proposed $24-billion equity swap-cum-strategic alliance that could have potentially created the world's third largest mobile phone enterprise.

According to Bharti, the proposed deal was called off after the South African authorities declined to accept certain regulatory constraints on the part of both sides.

Virgin Mobile, Spice Mobiles, MTNLState-run MTNL's 3G bid has got response from Richard Branson's Virgin Group and BK Modi-run Spice Group; while many private and international telecom giants refrained from participating in the 3G bid, given its low scope, dominance of other private players and less effectiveness.

MTNL Director (technical) Kuldip Singh said: "We have got bids from Virgin and Spice and are evaluating the technical parameters. We will look at their financial bids only if they are technically qualified."

Virgin Mobile, Spice Mobiles, MTNLIn a significant move, UK-based Virgin Mobile and B. K. Modi-promoted Spice Group submitted bids to market Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL) 3G services in two telecom circles.

Confirming the development, Kuldip Singh (Director Technical, MTNL) said: "We have received bids from both the firms on it. This bid will evaluate both the technical as well as financial bids. The firm offering better price points will be selected."

Singh further informed the media persons that the successful bidder will be announced within a month.

MTNL invites bids for Wi-Max Services

Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Ltd (MTNL), the state-owned telecom service provider in metros, has invited bids to sell its Wi-Max hi-speed wireless broadband services across the lading towns of the country, including Delhi and Mumbai. The firm wishes to adopt franchise route on revenue sharing basis for Wi-Max services, like its 3G services, to get better revenue realization.

The company said in its expression of Interest (EOI): "The bidder shall jointly work with the MTNL for working out strategies for advertising, marketing and promoting the broadband services, which shall carried out under the MTNL brand."

Global bids for WiMax operations invited by MTNL

MTNLAs per the media reports, Friday saw an invitation being extended by State-owned telco MTNL to global players for bids for the setting up and running of its WiMax operations in Delhi and Mumbai, on a franchisee basis for a six-year period.

A revenue sharing agreement would be entered in by MTNL with successful bidders.

The contract, which can be terminated if the franchisee partner does not meet the prescribed targets, will be reviewed every two years.
