Congress zeroes in on issues for poll manifesto

Having begun the preparations for the general polls, the Congress has started zeroing in on the issues which would be part of the election campaign in various parliamentary constituencies of the state and be part of the election manifesto for the coming elections.

The members involved with the manifesto have been asked to prepare a preliminary report with regard to identification of issues and submit the same to the central manifesto committee headed by Pranab Mukherjee.

Apart from involving local issues, the senior leaders involved in the process would identify the issues which could be linked to the issues that would be part of the national manifesto, senior leaders said. The party has identified issues and the final draft would be prepared after the approval of central manifesto committee, sources said.

Senior leaders also mentioned that unlike state Congress manifesto committee that had about 21 members in the body, a shorter panel would look into the issues concerning manifesto. Senior members like BD Kalla, who was the chairperson of state manifesto committee, besides other responsibilities would continue to have a significant role in identifying the issues.

Even before finalising the manifesto for assembly elections, the party had formed seven different committees for four divisions, for the purpose of identifying the issues for the Lok Sabha polls.

"After setting Target 25, the party wants to go full throttle for the parliamentary elections and the ground work has been already done,'' said a senior Congress leader.

Senior leaders mentioned that the impact of measures taken by the Congress-led UPA government in implementing NREGA, waiver to farmers and chief minister Ashok Gehlot's sops to the farmers and various other schemes being initiated in the villages would be the main issues to be highlighted in the manifesto.

In fact chief minister's recent announcements like filling up of 17,800 vacant posts of teachers, review of the survey about Indira Gandhi canal and new initiatives to set up power plants would form the part of election agenda in the coming polls, said a senior party leader.
