Conservatives discouraged the government for its lack of ability in providing proper care to the pregnant women. Labour party has reduced the number of beds nearly a quarter in the number of maternity wards since 1997.

Allegations by Conservatives were based on findings of the recent study. Study was based on the data collected from 10 NHS health trusts. The study indicated that many women have to give birth in inappropriate places due to shortage of beds in maternity room.

Figures indicated that at least a dozen women out of every thousand pregnant women in the capital have not given birth in a proper ward. Some of these cases of were accidental but most were result of shortage of beds.

In some circumstances women were forced to give birth in hospital lifts, car parks, bathrooms and even midwife offices. Data revealed that 4,000 women gave birth in a place other than a labour bed last year as compared to 3500 in 2007. In London only, 630 women gave birth in place other than labour bed.

Shadow Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley said, "It shows the incredible waste that has taken place that mothers are getting worse treatment when Gordon Brown has more than tripled spending on the NHS since 1997. Labour have let down mothers by cutting the number of maternity beds and by shutting down maternity units."
