CPI To Oppose Tata Titanium Project - TN

TATATiruchirapalli: CPI, a supporter of the ruling Democratic Progressive Alliance in Tamil Nadu, alleged that it would stoutly resist attainment of huge land stretches for Tata's projected titatium-dioxide scheme in the state.

R Nallakannu, CPI National Executive member told, “Why should large portions of lands be acquired for a single project and why the Union Government itself could not take it up rather than simply entrusting it to a private group,”

The CPI will pose firm resistance to the project, he said adding a thorough report about the party's position on the subject would be passed on to the Government.

Nallakannu, a previous state secretary of the party, articulated that a delegacy under his management inspected areas like Sathankulam and Radhapuram in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts to gather "direct information" from villagers.

The inhabitants were in dread and terror and also troubled about the potential loss of their occupation, he alleged.

Nallakannu also did not agree to the government’s declaration that only 315 acres of land were productive amidst the 16,000 acres demanded for the fresh project.
