Delhi Govt To Issue Health Guidelines To All Aided & Unaided Schools

Delhi Govt To Issue Health Guidelines To All Aided & Unaided Schools The Delhi government would shortly issue health guidelines to all aided and unaided schools in the city in order to handle any emergency situation.

The decision in this regard was taken on Wednesday, after the government-appointed group submitted its report to the Directorate of Education (DoE).

A source from the Education Department said, “The Directorate of Education (DoE) in association with all the recognised schools in the city will issue guidelines on specific medical facilities.”

The report highlighted the lack of first-aid facilities on the part of 17-years-old Aakriti Bhatia, a class XII student of Modern School in New Delhi, who died on her way to the hospital after having an asthma attack in the school premises.

According to reports, the delay in giving her medical attention in time aggravated her condition, leading to her death.

Mr. Arvinder Singh Lovely, education minister, stated, “We are preparing the guidelines in consultation with the health department and they will be issued in two-three days.”

According to the Delhi School Education Act, 1973 under rule 38, all recognized schools should appoint a part-time or full-time medical officer as per their requirements.

“The new guidelines would be more comprehensive and would be mandatory for schools,” Mr. Lovely said.

The Delhi Commission for Protection of Child's Right (DCPCR), in the meanwhile, has decided to move to Delhi High Court for registration of a criminal case against the school, accusing it for negligence on their part in Aakriti Bhatias' case.

The DoE report, though holding principal Goldy Malhotra responsible, didn't take any action against her.

The sources in DoE said, “Malhotra came to know of the incident very late. Also we have to take into account how much of `puffs' she (Aakriti) took, how ill was she the day before, what effect the ongoing construction had on her, among others, before coming to any conclusion.”
