Delhi Govt. opens stalls to sell onion & potato at affordable pricesConcerned at high prices of onion, the Government of Delhi has stalls to sell the important food ingredient at affordable prices.

While onion is selling in the range of Rs 60 to Rs 80 a kg in various parts of the country, the stall set up by the Delhi government are offering onion for Rs 32 to rs 35 per kg.

These stalls are also selling potato, which is also an important ingredient in a large number of India recipes, for Rs 12 per kg.

The stalls have been set up at Delhi's four wholesale markets as well as the Delhi Secretariat.  In total, nearly 350 stalls, including 250 Mother Dairy outlets, are selling onion and potato at nominal prices.

Food & Civil Supplies Minister Haroon Yusuf said, "The supply of onion and potatoes get affected during monsoon.  We are taking the price rise issue seriously, and if the need arises we will open more outlets."

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Government has asked producers to immediately release 6 lakh tones onion in the market.  Many onion producers have stored onions in various storages in the state.

In August this year, Maharashtra's key onion markets saw a year-on-year decline of nearly 50 per cent in onion arrival, which later pushed average price up to Rs 4,300 per 100 kilograms in the wholesale markets.
