DFB investigate Hamburg missile incident and Wolfsburg coach

Frankfurt - SV Hamburg are under investigation by the German football federation DFB after a player from visiting Werder Bremen was hit by a battery thrown from the stands in the teams' Bundesliga match on Sunday.

The DFB said in a statement that Hamburg have been asked for a report, on which further action will be based.

Werder captain Frank Baumann needed treatment after being struck in the face by a mobile phone battery thrown from the crowd while joining team-mates to celebrate Bremen's goal in the 2-1 defeat near the corner flag.

"It hit me on just above the left eyebrow. It was a shock and painful. There was a little bit of blood but it didn't hinder me," Baumann said.

Hamburg apologized swiftly for the incident while Bremen sports director Klaus Allofs said they will not take further action because incidents like that can happen in any stadium including their own.

"I want to apologize in the name of SV Hamburg. We don't know who it was but that sort of thing shouldn't happen," said Hamburg sports director Dietmar Beiersdorfer.

Allofs said: "These are things we are confronted with in our stadium as well. Big efforts are made to identify and punish these people. These people have no place in a football stadium."

The DFB is also investigating against VfL Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath, who was sent to the stands at half-time of his team's 4-1 victory over VfB Stuttgart.

Magath complained to the referee over his officiating, allegedly used inappropriate language and raised his voice. Magath has protested his innocence. (dpa)
