Domestic air travel to become costlier

Domestic air travel to become costlier India's domestic air travel will once become costlier as government-run Air India and private carrier Jet Airways have hiked fuel surcharge on their respective flight tickets by up to Rs 150, an industry source revealed.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the source said, "Both Jet Airways and Air India have revised their fuel surcharge on domestic network by up to Rs 150."

As per the source, both carriers have revised the fuel surcharge upwards by Rs 100 for travel up to 1,000 kilometers and by Rs 150 for travel above 1,000 kilometers.

No-frill carrier IndiGo has so far desisted from hiking fuel surcharge but it is now expected to take a call on the issue in the coming few days.

The industry source said that budget carriers, including Indigo, Spice Jet, GoAir might also hike fuel surcharge from April this year.

Two other no-frill carriers, viz. Spice Jet and GoAir, has so far not responded to a request seeking confirmation if they were also mulling to revise their fuel surcharge upwards.

Fuel bills account for almost 40 per cent of carriers' operations costs. Fuel surcharge, which was introduced in wake of start of the global economic crisis in 2008, helps carriers offset part of their operations costs.
