Excess Sugar and Carbohydrates are not the major reasons behind Obesity, Say Researchers

Health experts recently claimed that excess sugar and carbohydrates are not the only reasons behind the surge in obesity. Three authors of the editorial published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine said that poor diet now generates more disease than physical inactivity, alcohol and smoking combined.

The trio while elaborating on the issue pointed out that while obesity has increased tremendously in past 30 years, there has been very less change in physical activity a level of people.

The three argued on the myth that exercise is not the key to weight loss and to health, and called it erroneous and pervasive.

They said one can be of normal weight and still be unhealthy if they are eating poor diet. So they said one need to very clear that they need a basic reboot of one’s understanding of health, which has to involve the food industry’s powerful PR machinery.

They stressed on the point that public do not understand the point that exercise in and of itself doesn’t really lead to weight loss. It can lead to a number of excellent health effects, but weight loss isn’t one of them, they said.

Regular physical activity reduces the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, dementia and some cancers by at least 30%, they said.

They also told that in past 30 years exercising and physical activities have not reduced but still overweight and obesity have skyrocketed.

According to the Lancet global burden of disease reports, poor diets generates more disease than physical inactivity, alcohol and smoking combined.

“Up to 40% of those with a normal body mass index will harbor metabolic abnormalities typically associated with obesity, which include hypertension, dyslipidaemia, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and cardiovascular disease”, it said.
